The arrest of Arthur Beardmore 1762

BeardmoreArthur Beardmore was a radical lawyer, editor of The Monitor and friend of John Wilkes (the populist politician, journalist and American sympathiser during the Revolutionary War). In 1762 a warrant for Beardmore’s arrest was issued in response to a satirical article he published in The Monitor about the Princess Dowager and Lord Bute. To demonstrate the political nature of this act, Beadmore contrived to be arrested while teaching his son Magna Carta.
